Holiday reading to get you inspired for the New Year

The holiday season is a great time to get stuck into a few good books. Without the distraction and time of work and other commitments, relaxing and enjoying some inspiring books is a great way to recharge and get ready for the New Year. Here are our picks of some great books to read this holiday season.

Sorrow and bliss by Meg Mason

Set in London and Oxford, this novel is a good pick if you're a fan of Sally Rooney (the author of Normal People). The story is centred around Martha, a woman who knows there's something wrong with her but can't quite put her finger on what it is that's eating away at her. Her husband, Patrick, says she's fine and that everyone is dealing with something. A sad and funny story, this book is for anyone who's questioning what they really want out of life.

A theatre for dreamers by Polly Samson

Set on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, this novel is the escape you might be looking for, especially if your sunny, beachside holiday was cancelled this year. The story follows a group of poets, painters and musicians who live their tangled lives amidst the start of the revolutionary period that was the 60s and 70s. Just like Laurel Canyon in this era, the book includes the story of a love triangle where a young poet named Leonard Cohen is one of its points.

The Wim Hof Method by Wim Hof

You've probably heard about Wim Hof due to his ability to brave extremely cold temperatures and unlock his potential through the power of his breathing technique. In this book, Wim Hof details his three-pillar approach that people can use to improve their health and performance. You'll learn how to master cold, breathing and your mindset to reach your full potential.

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

A modern classic in the personal development and spirituality genres, Eckhart Tolle's 'The Power of Now' will open you up to a new way of living and perceiving the world around you. Grounded in the fact that the past and future don't exist, and all that we have is the "now", this book is a powerful reminder to take a deep breath and be mindful especially when life is challenging you.

Don't want to buy too many new books?

If you're conscious of buying a bunch of new books only to have these gather dust on your shelves once you've finished reading, try having a book swap with some of your friends and family. You could each read some books over the holiday period and then swap to enjoy a whole new collection.
